BASF and Bota Biosciences Launch Fermentation-Derived Collagen for Cosmetics

The commercial launch of SkinNexus Collag3n illustrates how biotechnology development, industrial feasibility assessment and collaboration can bring new cosmetic ingredients to market. Biotechnology is opening new routes for producing specialised cosmetic ingredients. However, translating laboratory research into commercial products requires more than scientific innovation: production feasibility, ingredient performance and access to established markets are also important.

In June 2026, BASF and Bota Biosciences announced the market launch of SkinNexus™ Collag3n, a fermentation-derived recombinant collagen ingredient for personal care applications.

Developed through a collaboration between the two companies, the ingredient made its global debut at in-cosmetics Global in April 2026 and is being commercialised by BASF.

From Biotechnology Research to a Commercial Ingredient

SkinNexus Collag3n is a recombinant fragment of human collagen type III produced through yeast fermentation. According to BASF, its amino acid sequence is identical to the corresponding region of human collagen. The ingredient offers a biotechnology-based manufacturing route that does not require collagen extraction from animal tissues. The partners combined Bota Biosciences’ expertise in synthetic biology and biomanufacturing with BASF’s capabilities in cosmetic ingredient development and commercialisation.

BASF reports that more than 2,000 collagen fragments were screened during development, with candidate selection taking place alongside assessments of industrial production feasibility.

This approach connected early-stage ingredient research with the practical requirements of manufacturing.

Industry Collaboration Supports Commercialisation

The collaboration illustrates how specialist biotechnology developers can work with established ingredient suppliers to progress towards market entry.

Bota Biosciences contributed its technology platform, while BASF provided expertise in cosmetic actives, application development and access to the personal care market.

BASF reports that the ingredient was evaluated using laboratory skin models and clinical testing, with results relating to selected collagen markers and the appearance of wrinkles and skin sagging. These findings are company-reported; the underlying study data were not independently assessed for this article. The confirmed commercial milestone is the ingredient’s market launch. Publicly available information reviewed for this article does not establish the extent of subsequent customer adoption or sales.

Lessons for Bio-Innovation Translation

For companies developing cosmetic ingredients, functional biomolecules and fermentation-based technologies, the BASF–Bota Biosciences collaboration highlights the importance of considering industrial feasibility alongside scientific development.

The case also demonstrates the role of partnerships in connecting specialist biotechnology capabilities with formulation expertise and commercial distribution. While the long-term market performance of SkinNexus Collag3n remains to be established, its launch represents a documented step from biotechnology development to commercial ingredient availability.

For the wider bio-innovation sector, it illustrates how research, manufacturing considerations and industry collaboration can come together to support technology translation.
